Q & A With 2021 QB Prospect Matthew Geeting

The Middle Tennessee football coaching staff recently offered 2021 QB prospect Matthew Geeting from Chino Hills, CA. Geeting is 6'5", 200 lbs and listed as a pro-style QB by Rivals.

2019 was his first year starting for Chino Hills and Geeting went 205 of 354 for 2,520 yards with 27 touchdowns in 12 games. He was awarded first team All-Baseline League and first team All-CIF.

GoMiddle.com caught up with Geeting recently to get his feelings about being offered a scholarship by MTSU and the status of his recruitment.

What was the initial reaction to getting the offer?

"It was a dream come true! Growing up always playing football the goal ever since I really could think was to always to be able to play D1 football! It is crazy now that I’m given the opportunity to play football at the next level and to have an offer from such a great program! It was truly a blessing!"

So MTSU was your first offer? Are you hearing from any other schools?

"MTSU was my second offer. I’m currently talking to a couple other schools. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be in the position that I’m in right now."

Lehigh was Geeting's first offer. MTSU is his first D1-FBS football offer. He is also hearing from California schools San Diego State and San Jose State.

What would you say your biggest strengths are as a QB? Where do you think you can improve?

"Definitely my mental game I would say is my biggest strength. I’m able to read the defense and have the ability to get the ball where I want it to go giving the receiver the best chance to catch it. An area where I’d say I need to work on would be my speed and strength. I definitely know there is room for improvement in both categories."

How have you been preparing while under lockdown due to the coronavirus?

"My high school head coach has been providing us great at home workouts to stay in shape. Also I’ve been watching a lot of film on some of our opponents this upcoming year. We’ve been blessed to have film up already. I also have been going to my local park and throwing into my target net while doing drills to keep my throwing abilities."

Do you have any visits planned? Any schools you want to see?

"This summer I definitely want to go and visit MTSU and Lehigh (my first offer). Other than that I’m not fully sure on how things will clear up with this virus, so it is hard to plan as of now."

Any plans on a timeline for a commitment? Or do you plan to wait for more offers to come in?

"For now I want to see how my senior season will play out and after that I will start to really nail down where I want to go.However with this virus the timeline might change if my season gets canceled."

MTSU also has a couple of coaching connection to Geeting's high school. Mykeal Terry is the Athletic Director at Chino Hills, many GoMiddle readers may remember him from his time as a WR at Troy. He played for MTSU offensive coordinator Tony Franklin while there and played alongside MTSU WR Coach Austin Silvoy. Terry is also a camp QB coach for the Tony Franklin System.

When you watch the film on Geeting, it's impossible not to see the arm talent. His tall frame allows him to put the ball all over the field. One criticism Geeting is aware of about his game - and you can see on film - is that he is over-reliant on his arm strength and does not always step into his throws. He attributes this to adjusting to pressure and not always being ready to step into the pocket and deliver a throw while taking a hit. He expects he will be more acclimated to this as he gets stronger and gets more starts under his belt.

Coach Franklin is very selective of his quarterbacks, and the fact he identified Geeting so early as a QB worth a scholarship offer should bode well for MTSU.
