MTSU Adds Transfer Dontrell Shuler

MTSU received big news on Thursday as Charleston Southern guard Dontrell Shuler announced he is transferring to the Blue Raiders.

Shuler lead Charleston Southern in points per game with 17.9 in the 2019-2020 campaign. His usage rate was 32.6% last year for Charleston Southern - for reference, that's 22nd highest in the country. 51.8% true shooting percentage at that usage rate is really impressive, especially for a smaller combo guard. He shot 65% at the rim, an astronomical figure given his stature. That statistic is made even more impressive when you consider he did not attempt a dunk all year.

His outside shot will need significant improvement, however, as he only shot 34.9% on away from the rim two-pointers and 31.6% from the three point line, per barttorvik.com

He only played 15 games for the Buccaneers last season, and we understand he was suspended by the team for the last four contests of the season. When Shuler first entered his name into the transfer portal, CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh told the Post and Courier, “after several meetings with Dontrell, we came to a mutual decision that it would be best for Dontrell to enter the transfer portal. We appreciate Dontrell’s contributions to our program and wish him nothing but the best. We will continue to support and pray for Dontrell as he moves forward.”

Shuler played in 30 games (19 starts) for Charleston Southern as a true freshman. He averaged 10.9 points, 1.8 assists and 2.7 rebounds in those contests. Middle Tennessee played Charleston Southern on 11/16/18 (his freshman year.) Against his future team, Shuler put up 9 points, 2 assists, and 3 rebounds in 23 minutes. He shot 2-6 in the mid-range, 1-3 from three.

Because of his lack of playing time down the stretch last season, and the NCAA's increasingly liberal stance regarding one time transfer waivers, it stands to reason Shuler will have a good case for immediate eligibility with the Blue Raiders for the 2020-2021 campaign.

Dontrell is the younger brother of Ole Miss guard Devontae Shuler, who plays for former MTSU head coach Kermit Davis.
