Wells impresses at O-D practice

It's been a while since the Middle Tennessee football program could say they signed a true high school All-American.

Well, this year they can make that statement.

P/K A.J. Wells received First Team All-American honors from ProKicker.com following a senior season where he averaged 40.4 yards per punt and put 18 balls inside the 20-yard line. In addition to that honor, Wells was also voted the Columbus All-Valley Area Special Teams Player of the Year.

For his efforts, Wells was invited to the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Orlando, where he has been practicing and taking part in team activities all week.

The O-D Bowl is a prestigious event that has drawn the likes of Cam Newton, Dez Bryant, Golden Tate, Joe Haden and a slew of other talented prospects to the game.

Recent special teams participants include Oregon's Matt Wogan, Kentucky's Austin MacGinnis, Tennessee's George Bullock, Florida's Kyle Christy and Notre Dame's Kyle Brindza.

And now, Middle Tennessee can say they have a player partaking in the festivities.

In practice sessions this week, Wells has taken advantage of the spotlight he has been given, making quite the name for himself in the process.

"I've been killing it here," Wells said via direct message on Twitter. "Yesterday, I was given two kickoffs with the team and I put both of them out the back of the end zone. I also had a 60-yard punt on the first day with the team."

The O-D Bowl is slated for Friday at 4 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPN3. The game will be re-broadcasted by FoxSports on Monday.
